Description
Civil War in uniform: Samuel Stark Hudson, J. Pettinger (J. Pettenger) and R. R. Cooper (A. R. Cooper) Samuel Stark Hudson was born March 4, 1843 and was married in 1868. In 1861, at age 18, he responded to the first call of President Lincoln for volunteers and served throughout the Civil war, fighting in the first Battle of Bull Run and being present in the Grand Review in Washington at the end of that year. He served under General Meade at Gettysburg and under Grant in the closing campaign of Virginia. He was twice captive by Confederate soldiers and suffered imprisonment in Libby prison until exchanged. After the war he moved with his father's family to Lowell, MI. He was a farmer, millwright and carpenter. We now have the original tin type and the brass nameplate that goes with it stored in MC#84- Hudson family
